On 28-29 September, UNFPA and the Ministry of Women and Family, with the support of the EU, organized a workshop for the enforcement of laws governing FGM. The workshop brought together members of the national committee against FGM, judicial police officers, magistrates, lawyers, parliamentarians, and members of the religious leaders’ network Shamekat Djibouti and of the civil society to highlight the bottlenecks related to the implementation of the law on FGM.
Participants agreed on the need to integrate a module on GBV with a focus on FGM in public service competition, organize a meeting with religious leaders for the enactment of a fatwa on FGM, integrate training on child psychology in the curriculum of national education, allocate a specific budget line for the fight against FGM, strengthen the care system for the FGM survivors, and that the term Sunnah to describe clitoridectomy be banned
