While even before the COVID-19 pandemic, all reports indicate the existence of many gaps in the country's health system, the rapid and exponential increase in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country overwhelmed the health system and diverted efforts from the availability of basic health care and in particular maternal and reproductive health care.
In order to ensure the continuity of these services and make quality care available in a secure environment, UNFPA allocated a large batch of hygiene products and materials to 13 maternity hospitals in the country.
This action took place while a large communication campaign and capacity building activities for midwives and community health workers are ongoing.
